ChatGPT Sends Under 1% of Google Organic Traffic: 2026 Data on 100 Sites
ChatGPT referrals equal just 0.62% of Google organic sessions, according to Marie Haynes’ analysis of 12 months of GA4 data across 100 websites and more than 145 million sessions. Adding every other LLM lifts that only to 0.73%. Among the 55 sites tracking conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% versus 3.02% for Google organic. Google organic still produced roughly 27 times more conversions than all LLMs combined (964 vs. 36). ChatGPT referral growth across the sample stopped compounding in August 2025, around the GPT-5 release, and has declined since. Haynes argues that the AI search sending customers to businesses today is Google’s own, through AI Overviews and AI Mode. The study did not disclose its industry mix or how conversions were defined.
For multi-site healthcare groups weighing GEO tools or AI-visibility retainers, this is a budget signal. Patient volume still runs through Google: organic results, local results, and its AI surfaces. Track LLM referrals as a small, high-intent channel, but fund the Google fundamentals first.
Should a healthcare group be paying for AI-visibility tools right now? Based on this data, I wouldn’t, at least not at the expense of the basics. Three things I’d take from it:
- Patients still find you through Google. For local, appointment-based care, that means organic results, the map pack, your Google Business Profiles, and increasingly AI Overviews. That’s Google’s AI, not ChatGPT’s.
- Fix measurement first. Haynes found 45 of her 100 sites weren’t tracking any key events. In healthcare, many bookings happen by phone or through an online scheduler. If calls and booked appointments aren’t tied back to their source, you can’t fairly compare any channel, AI or otherwise.
- Watch, don’t chase. Set up an AI-referral channel group in GA4 so you can see the trend. Keep doing the work that helps both channels: accurate profiles, clear service pages, and real reviews.
One caveat: this sample didn’t disclose its industry mix, so treat it as directional for healthcare, not as a benchmark.

How much website traffic does ChatGPT send compared with Google organic search?
About 0.62% as many sessions, based on 12 months of GA4 data across 100 websites and more than 145 million sessions. Including all other LLMs raises that to 0.73% of Google organic volume. That’s a share of Google’s traffic, not of total site traffic.
Do ChatGPT visitors convert better than Google organic visitors?
At a higher rate, but in far lower volume. Among 55 sites tracking conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% versus 3.02% for Google organic. Google organic still delivered about 27 times more conversions than all LLMs combined.
Should businesses prioritize GEO over Google SEO in 2026?
This data says Google should stay the priority. Haynes argues that Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI-driven ranking systems are the AI search actually sending customers today. Search Engine Land cautions that current referral numbers don’t predict how important AI visibility will become.
