38 Hospital M&A Closings in 2026: Buyers and Divestitures Through Oct. 1
Becker’s Hospital Review counted 38 hospital mergers and acquisitions completed in 2026 in its Oct. 16 update, listed from Oct. 1 back to Jan. 1. Six deals closed on Oct. 1 alone, including WVU Health System’s five-hospital Independence Health System deal in Pennsylvania and UPMC’s first Ohio entry with four Trinity Health System facilities. The tally includes large transactions such as the $3.9 billion take-private of Select Medical and Lifepoint Health’s purchase of eight ScionHealth hospitals across six states, alongside many critical access and rural hospitals. Divestitures recur: CHS exited Arkansas and Pennsylvania, and several Prospect Medical Holdings hospitals in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania changed hands. Becker’s does not state a closing date for several deals.
For operators competing for referrals, physicians and payer leverage, a closed hospital deal redraws the local map: new owners bring capital, rebrands and their own referral networks. Rural and critical access hospitals joining larger systems can also shift where patients in those markets go for specialty care.
Use it for: a quarterly local-market check. If a hospital in your service area appears on this list, expect its referral relationships, physician employment and branding to change as the new owner integrates it.
Watch out for: this is Becker’s running tally of deals it reported, not a complete census. Several closing dates are unstated, and buyer types range from health systems to nonprofits, a real estate firm and a take-private, so counts are not like-for-like.
Try this: pull every acquired hospital within your market from this list and from the March 10 snapshot of ten closings, then note each new owner, any rename, and which of your referral sources it employs. Repeat the check each quarter.

Which buyers completed more than one hospital deal on the 2026 list?
Baptist Health appears twice, adding Magnolia Regional Medical Center and South Arkansas Regional Hospital as its 14th and 13th hospitals. Prime Healthcare and Prime Healthcare Foundation also appear twice, with Franciscan Health Olympia Fields in Illinois and Central Maine Healthcare.
Were any 2026 hospital acquisitions tied to bankruptcy?
Yes. Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Mississippi had filed Chapter 9 before the University of Mississippi Medical Center acquired it, with bankruptcy court approval on July 17. John Fitzgibbon Memorial Hospital in Missouri went to American Medical Administrators in a court-approved sale after an earlier $10.5 million deal collapsed.
