AI Citations Churn Daily: Ahrefs Tracked 37,500 Across Five AI Tools
Published by Ahrefs, which sells SEO and AI-search visibility software. Not an endorsement by Healthcare Growth Strategies, Paul Gruensfelder or his employer. Sample/method: About 37,500 websites cited on day one, tracked daily for 20 days across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot (8,000+ questions), cross-checked against Ahrefs Brand Radar reports; questions centered on marketing and SEO topics. At least half of AI citations disappear by the next day, according to Ahrefs, which followed about 37,500 cited websites across five AI tools daily for 20 days. Next-day loss ran about 50% on Google AI Overviews, 58% on AI Mode, 59% on ChatGPT and over 80% on Gemini and Copilot. About 75% of lost citations returned within the 20 days, about half within three days. Citations that held 8 or more days almost always came back (96% to 99%), while one-day citations never returned 34% to 41% of the time. On Google’s tools, ranking, search traffic and a title that answers the question went with longer-lasting citations; extra domain rating or backlinks beyond the basics did not.
Practice groups are starting to report AI visibility to owners and boards. If half of citations vanish overnight and most return, a single spot check will show false wins and false losses, and teams may rewrite pages for noise.
Use it for: Setting an AI-visibility KPI for a multi-location group that measures citation frequency over time instead of a one-day snapshot.
Watch out for: The questions were about marketing and SEO tools, not healthcare, and the data is Ahrefs’ own, gathered with its own product. Patterns may shift with model updates, and the study tracked only the first disappearance of each citation.
Try this: Pick 10 patient questions per service line (for example “best pediatric dentist near me”), check them daily for a week in ChatGPT and AI Overviews, and record days-cited out of 7. Location-level gaps matter too: see why 1 in 5 locations never appear in AI answers.

Does changing a page explain why an AI citation came back?
Not by itself. Ahrefs found most lost citations return within days without any change, so a single comeback after an edit is weak evidence. Look for a sustained rise in how often the page is cited instead.
