AI-Generated Summary

Searching your own brand name increasingly returns a Google AI Overview first. Ahrefs analyzed 232.8 million US desktop search-result crawls from July to September 2026 and found AI Overviews appeared on 82.91% of branded-keyword results as of September 29. Monthly averages climbed from 61.3% of branded keywords in July to 65.1% in August and 73.3% in September, a 12-point jump, while non-branded keywords rose more slowly (73.5% to 78.3%). The gap between branded and non-branded triggers narrowed from 12.2 points to 5. In a separate check of 100 major brand names, 63 showed an AI Overview by September 30. That gives third-party sources such as Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn more say in how a brand is described.

Why It Matters

A patient who searches your practice or DSO by name may now read an AI summary before reaching your site. Audit what that summary says, and make sure the sources it draws on (listings, review sites, your own pages) are accurate.

HGS Take

Use it for: Deciding whether brand-name searches for your practice or DSO deserve a monthly audit, since the first thing a patient reads may now be an AI summary rather than your site.

Watch out for: The data is Ahrefs’ US desktop sample, so mobile and local-pack results may differ. Do not respond by asking patients for reviews in exchange for rewards or screening who may post; Google’s policies prohibit review gating. Ask every patient the same way.

Try this: Search your top 5 locations by name this week, screenshot each AI Overview, and fix wrong hours, services or addresses at the source. Then use our healthcare marketing strategies guide to plan the brand pages and review profiles that feed those answers.
